Protein capsules and pills: which types actually work?

Protein capsules and pills range from collagen to BCAAs to pre-digested complete protein. What each type delivers, and what to check before you buy.

Protein pills work when two things are true: the protein is complete, and it's in a form your gut can take up directly. Most capsules sold as "protein" are collagen or a handful of amino acids, which miss the first test. Recov passes both. It's a complete protein with all 20 amino acids, pre-digested into peptides and pressed into tablets.

About us: we're Recov, an Australian brand from Future Supplements Pty Limited. Since 2010 we've sold one protein tablet, Recov Protein Concentrate: 180 pre-digested plasma protein tablets a bottle, $119.95 one-time or from $79.95 on subscription.

What kinds of protein pills are there?

Search for "protein capsules" and you'll find four quite different products sold under similar names:

  1. Collagen capsules. Hydrolysed collagen from hide, bone or fish scales, in a capsule shell.
  2. BCAA tablets. Three amino acids only: leucine, isoleucine and valine.
  3. EAA tablets. The essential amino acids, the ones your body can't make, as free single amino acids.
  4. Pre-digested complete protein tablets. A whole protein broken down into short peptides before it's pressed. Recov is one.

They aren't interchangeable. What a pill can do comes down to what's in it and what form it's in.

Do protein capsules actually work?

It depends which of the four you're holding. Ask three questions.

Is it complete? MedlinePlus, the US National Library of Medicine's health site, explains that essential amino acids can't be made by the body and "must come from food". A protein missing one of them can't cover that gap on its own. Collagen is the best-known example. A 2019 review in Nutrients (Paul et al.) notes that collagen lacks tryptophan and is classed as an incomplete protein. BCAA tablets are incomplete by design: they carry three amino acids out of 20.

What form is it in? Whole protein arrives as long chains your gut has to digest for hours. Free amino acids are fully broken apart. Di- and tri-peptides sit in between: chains two or three units long that your gut takes up through a dedicated transporter called PEPT1. In a classic human study, Hellier and colleagues found amino acids were absorbed faster from dipeptides than from the same amino acids given free (Gut, 1972).

Can you check it? Look for every amino acid listed with an amount, not a proprietary blend.

"Your whole bloodstream carries only 2–3g of amino acids at any moment. Six tablets of Recov deliver roughly that entire amount, already broken down into small peptides your body absorbs directly."

Is Recov a capsule or a tablet?

A tablet. Capsules are a shell filled with powder. Tablets are the powder itself, pressed. Recov is pre-digested protein pressed with two tableting aids, magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide, so there's no shell and nothing else in the tablet. No sweeteners, flavours, colours or fillers.

What makes Recov different from other protein pills?

Recov is an Australian brand from Future Supplements Pty Limited. It has been sold since 2010 and is made to EU manufacturing standards. It's the one type in the table that is both complete and pre-digested.

We call the principle behind it the Bi-Peptide Window. Your whole bloodstream carries only 2–3g of amino acids at any moment. Six tablets of Recov deliver roughly that entire amount, already broken down into small peptides your body absorbs directly. Peptides are also burned for energy about ten times more slowly than free amino acids, so more of every tablet goes to work instead of being used up as fuel.

The International Society of Sports Nutrition's 2017 position stand on protein says that "rapidly digested proteins that contain high proportions of essential amino acids (EAAs) and adequate leucine, are most effective" at stimulating muscle protein synthesis. It also calls supplementation "a practical way of ensuring intake of adequate protein quality and quantity". A complete protein that's already broken down, in a tablet you can carry anywhere, is about as practical as it gets.

Each four-tablet serve also carries 4.46 mg of naturally occurring iron, which contributes to normal energy production. You can read every row of the label on the ingredients page, and the science page explains the PEPT1 route.

Are protein pills safe to take every day?

Protein itself is an everyday nutrient. The NHMRC Nutrient Reference Values set the recommended intake for adults aged 19–70 at 0.84 g per kilogram of body weight a day for men and 0.75 g/kg for women. The questions for any pill are what's in it and whether it suits you.

Recov is built for daily use:

  • Everyday: 6 tablets a day
  • Training: 8–12 tablets a day
  • Heaviest training blocks: 12–18 tablets a day

The label sets a serve at four tablets. Take them with water, together or split across the day. On training days, the chart on the product page puts four about 30 minutes before your session and two straight after, with four more before bed on heavier days.

Recov isn't suitable for vegetarians, vegans, anyone following a halal or kosher diet, or anyone who avoids pork. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, managing a health condition or taking prescription medication, talk to your health professional before starting any supplement.

Frequently asked questions

Do protein capsules work?

Complete, pre-digested protein does. Collagen capsules and BCAA tablets are incomplete, so they can't stand in for a complete protein. Recov carries all 20 amino acids as di- and tri-peptides.

Can you get protein pills instead of powder?

Yes. Recov is pre-digested protein in tablet form. You take it with water, so there's no shaker and no flavour.

What is the best protein capsule?

Look for three things: a complete amino acid profile, a form your gut takes up directly, and a label that lists every amino acid on the panel with an amount. Recov is built on all three.

Are protein pills the same as amino acid tablets?

Not always. Amino acid tablets (BCAA or EAA) supply free amino acids, and usually only some of them. Recov is a whole protein, pre-digested, with all 20.

Is Recov dairy-free?

Yes. Recov is made from porcine plasma protein, so it's dairy-free and lactose-free.

How much does Recov cost?

A 180-tablet bottle is $119.95 one-time, or from $79.95 a bottle on subscription. Your first order is covered by a money-back guarantee. See Recov Protein Concentrate.

Recov is made to EU manufacturing standards. Anti-doping bodies do not approve or endorse any supplement; if you are drug-tested, check Recov with your sporting body before you take it. Always read the label and follow the directions for use.
